What are the structural components of STS Gantry Crane?

1. Metal structure

Girder: It is the main load-bearing structure of the crane. It is generally a box-shaped structure, welded from multiple steel plates. Its length depends on the conditions of the dock and the ship, and some are as long as 100 meters. The girder has to bear the weight of the trolley and container, so it has high strength and rigidity requirements. It provides a running track for the trolley so that the trolley can move horizontally on it, thereby realizing the lifting of the container in the width direction of the ship.

Gantry legs: They mainly play a supporting role and have various structural forms such as A-type and H-type. A-type gantry legs are two inclined legs, while H-type gantry legs are two vertical legs plus a crossbeam. Wheels are installed at the bottom of the gantry legs, which contact the dock rails and transfer the weight of the crane to the ground. The gantry legs are tightly connected to the beam to ensure the overall structural stability of the crane and prevent it from overturning.

2. Lifting mechanism

Power and transmission components: including motors and reducers. The motor provides power, and its power is determined by factors such as the crane's lifting capacity. The reducer is used to convert the high-speed rotation of the motor into a low-speed, high-torque rotation suitable for the drum, ensuring that the lifting mechanism can lift the container smoothly.

Drum and wire rope: The drum is used to wind the wire rope. Its size and structure must meet the winding requirements of the wire rope. The wire rope is a key component of lifting. One end is connected to the drum, and the other end is connected to the container spreader through a pulley block. When the drum rotates, the wire rope is wound or released to achieve the rise or fall of the container.

Pulley block: The pulley block can change the direction of the wire rope and can save effort. Through a reasonable pulley combination, heavier containers can be lifted with less effort.

3. Operating organization

Trolley running mechanism: mainly composed of motor, reducer and wheels, installed on the beam. The motor drives the wheels to make the trolley move horizontally on the beam track to adjust the position of the container in the width direction of the ship.

Trolley travel mechanism: Located at the bottom of the portal legs, it includes wheels, drive motors and brakes. The wheels run on the dock rails, the drive motor provides power to move the crane at the front of the dock, and the brake is used to control the crane to stop and remain stationary, so that the crane can load and unload containers in the length direction of the ship.
