How to choose the material of Crane Rope drum

How to choose the material of Crane Rope drum to ensure its strength and durability

1. Material of the reel

Choice of carbon steel: For general-purpose crane drums, high-quality carbon steel is a common choice. For example, Q235B carbon steel has good mechanical properties and a yield strength of about 235MPa. Its price is relatively affordable and is suitable for crane drums with small lifting weights and low operating frequencies. During the manufacturing process, appropriate heat treatment processes, such as normalizing, can refine the grains and further improve its strength and toughness.

For situations requiring higher strength, Q345B carbon steel can be considered. Its yield strength can reach 345MPa and can withstand greater tension. This steel is often used in medium-sized crane drums, especially in the field of construction cranes, and can meet the needs of lifting heavier construction materials.

Application of alloy steel: When the crane needs to operate in harsh environments or under high load and high frequency working conditions, alloy steel is a better choice. These drums need to frequently lift and lower heavy objects, and alloy steel can withstand huge tension and friction, ensuring the long-term and stable use of the drum.

For some occasions with special requirements for corrosion resistance, such as crane drums used at the seaside or in chemical environments, alloy steel containing alloy elements such as nickel and molybdenum can be selected. These elements can improve the corrosion resistance of steel and prevent the drum from reducing its strength due to corrosion.

2. Side plate (flange) material

Match the strength of the drum body: The material of the side plate should match the drum body to ensure the overall strength. Generally, if the drum body is made of carbon steel, the side plate can be made of carbon steel of the same or slightly higher strength.

When the drum body is made of alloy steel, the side plates also need to be made of high-strength alloy steel. In addition, the side plates can be made thicker or have reinforcing ribs to improve their anti-deformation ability to adapt to the lateral force generated by the wire rope during winding.

Consider toughness and wear resistance: The toughness of the side plate material is also important, because the side plate may be subjected to unexpected impact during the operation of the crane. Choosing a material with good toughness, such as alloy steel containing manganese, can reduce the risk of the side plate breaking due to impact. At the same time, in order to improve the wear resistance of the side plate, heat treatment processes such as quenching and nitriding can be used on the surface, or a wear-resistant coating can be sprayed to cope with the friction between the wire rope and the side plate.
